This course of study is designed to provide students with the basic set of skills necessary to obtain an entry-level position as an information technology technician. The course is designed around the requirements of the industry's recognized national certification exam known as the A+ Certification. Students successfully completing this program will be prepared to obtain the A+ Certification.

Students learn shop safety, system operation, software applications, basic electricity, hardware operations of peripheral devices, multimedia devices, service operation administration, use of vendor diagnostics, troubleshooting techniques, communication basics, and the operations of network systems.

Students successfully completing this program have many opportunities for both employment and furthering their education. Many companies are adding technicians and support personnel to their staff rather than contracting outside support. Employment is also such as computer retailers and retail chains.

Numerous opportunities are available for students to further their education in this field. Technical schools and colleges offer programs of study in this area to prepare for advanced careers. Educational opportunities are also provided by employers through the major hardware and software manufacturers to further an employee's knowledge. In addition, students may earn college credit at Allegany College of Maryland for the skills they acquire in the IT & Networking program through the articulation agreement.
